Day 3: Picasso, Klee, and More

It was rainy today in Lucern, so we spent a lot of the day at the Rosengart Collection. This museum was founded by Angela Rosengart who was an art dealer who ended up keeping a lot of her art (and her father's) instead of selling it.  The three story building is full of impressionist and post-impressionist work. This is Angela (as sketched by Picasso).

So, Angela and her father made many trips to Spain to spend time with Picasso and sell his work in Switzerland. From the huge number of Picasso drawings, paintings, and sculptures at the museum, it's pretty clear they must have kept most of what they brought back. There are 180 works by Picasso on display. It is absolutely stunning.

And 125 by Paul Klee.

There were works by Cezanne, Chagall, Monet, Matisse, Miró and Léger along with a few Kandinsky's and more.

Matisse

Léger

There was a whole room of Chagall's work.

We ended the day by getting on a fairly cheesy City Train Tour--but a good thing to do on a rainy day.

We leave tomorrow for Lugano.
